Through The Wall [ w/ Room 3 ]

Odette lay on one of the twin beds, leaning her back against the wall behind her. She heard knocking and immediately sat up, staring at the door.

'Is that the villain ..?' she thought, gripping the sheets as she anxiously waited for it to open.

'Hello?!'

Odette jumped when she heard a female voice coming from behind her.

'Duh, this is the villains creepy hideout .. he wouldn't knock before coming in,' she thought as she turned around and sighed in relief when she realised the voice was coming from the other side of the wall.

'Hello?! Who's there?' Odette called out.

"Hello? I'm Anya. Who are you?" Anya asked. She was surprised that she could actually hear the girl on the other side.

'I'm Odette, it's nice to know there's another girl close by,' she said and laughed, 'my current roommate is a guy called Tulio, we were together in a different room before and since we've moved here all he's done is sleep .. are you sharing a room with anyone?'

"Yes a man named Eric, he's nice." Anya smiled, "But he's still asleep."

'Men, what are you gonna do with them,' she said and laughed.

Odette noticed the tone of Anya's voice and recognised it immediately, the girls in her line of work would use it whenever they talked about a client they'd gotten too attached to.

'So, are the two of you close?' she asked, though, she thought, she already knew the answer.

Anya laughed a little, this girl was good at reading people. "It's complicated," she sighed. "What about you and this Tulio?" she asked quickly trying to change the subject.

'Tulio?' Odette thought for a moment, 'I don't think he likes me that much, I think it was because I made the mistake of telling him I was a ..' she stopped herself before she ended up making the same mistake with Anya.

a what? Anya thought. But she didn't press she new from personal experience that privacy was important. "Well he seems a little judgemental whatever you are can't be so bad. We've all done things we're not proud of." Anya rested her head against the wall. She could tell Odette didn't really want to talk about it. "So, what do you like to do for fun?" It was a lame question, but still she was curious.

'Yeah .. we all have our sins ..' she whispered, remembering something Esmeralda had said to her when she'd first woken up in this place.

'Fun?' Odette laughed, it had been such a long time since she'd had fun. Living on the streets by herself didn't give her much oppurtunity for that, but there was one thing she always loved to do, one of the few things that had always made her feel free, even when she lived back home with her father.

'I love to dance,' she said, smiling to herself, 'even when there's no music ..' she remembered the times she would dance in the street, no instruments, just her and her body.

'What about you Anya? What's your favourite thing to do?'

Anya sighed. what did she like to do? "My job doesn't really let me have too much free time or free thinking for that matter, but I like to dance as well." Anya remembered what she had told Eric. "I love to read. I get lost in a book and I just forget everything else. It takes me away," Anya grinned. "You know this feeling?"

'You must have a demanding job then. What is it you do?' Odette paused and hurriedly added, 'you don't have to tell me if you don't want to ..'

'I know it all too well,' Odette said, lowering her voice, 'sometimes life can get a bit too much without some sort of escape ..'

"Yes my job is very demanding," She hesitated before continuing, "I'm an actress, and I am under watch 24/7 by journalists just waiting for me to do something stupid. my whole career involves someone directing me on what to do and what to say. I'm never free. I've missed out on so much, and now that I'm locked up here I fear that I'll never get to experience all that I missed."

'Wow, an actress. I'm sorry about the lack of privacy, but your life must have been very glamorous,' Odette said, smiling as she remembered the occasions when a rich client would pay for her services and show her the high life for a few nights.

'Wait a minute ..' she said as a thought struck her, 'if you're an actress, surely there will be people who will miss you and be looking for you.'

"So," Anya sighed, "Sorry for laying all of that on you." She didn't want to pry but she wanted to know "So Odette what do you do as a profession? You don't have to tell me if you don't want to."

'Well ..' Odette said, hesitating.

She remembered what Anya had said to her earlier when she mentioned Tulio's reaction to what she did for a living and decided to just get it over and done with.

'I'm a .. prostitute ..' she said finally, 'but I prefer to call myself a seductress, it sounds classier than prostitute,' she continued and laughed.

Odette heard another voice nearby, she moved towards the sound and pressed her ear against the wall.

'Hello? My name's Odette ..' she called and paused as she heard arguing from the other side, 'are you ok over there?'

this was new Anya has never met a prostitute before. "Well if being a seductress is what you like to do, who am I to judge?" Anya laughed, "Sorry I'm just so inexperienced in that department."

'Well, it's more of a need than a want,' she said as she thought back to her father for a moment, then she smiled, 'thanks for being so nice about it Anya. You're one of the few women I've told, who isn't also in this profession, that didn't freak out when I told them.'

'I wouldn't expect you to be,' she replied and laughed, 'I guess the closest you might have come to a prostitute was if you or another actress was playing one in a movie ..'

"Oh I'm not talking about prostitution, I mean yes I've never been a prostitute, but I meant sex in general. In fact I just recently had my first kiss," anya hit her head against the wall laughing lightly, "I know i'm pathetic." Anya sighed "And no problem with the whole being nice thing, really I know what it's like to be judged it's not fun."

'Oh, I see,' Odette smiled, 'it's not pathetic at all, in fact, I think it's sweet .. your first kiss wouldn't happen to be with that guy you're sharing a room with, would it?' she asked, innocently.

Anya laughed "Yes despite my better judgement I let my feelings rule over my head and I kissed him."

'Well, I'm sure there's no harm in letting your heart win out sometimes, especially when we're in a place like this ..' Odette smiled weakly, '.. it's nice to know we're not totally alone here ..'

Even if no one could escape this place, they could still enjoy what little time they had left. Together.

'So, what's this guy like? The one you're sharing a room with,' she asked.

"Well..." well what? Anya thought. "It's hard to describe him, he's very reserved, like he always thinks things over before he talks, but he's sweet when I was scared he held my hand." Anya smiled remembering, "What about you? Do you have someone you're interested in?"

'Aww that really is so sweet,' she said smiling to herself, 'you're so lucky to have met a guy like that, I guess at least one good thing came out of all this.'

At her question, Odette thought back to the guys she'd met. Because she travelled around a lot, most of her clients were just one night stands, although she did have a few regular customers, only one was worth mentioning.

'There is this one guy, he's a client, but when he's around it doesn't feel like I'm just with him to pay for my next meal. He understands me and makes me feel special ..' she paused, smiling as she remembered all the times he would hold her and they'd just talk for hours.

'But what about Meg? He may say those sweet things, but who does he go to when you're not around?'

'I just wish I could say I was his one and only ..' she said, annoyed at the voice for reminding her of Meg.

"I'm sorry, I know how that feels, I mean to love someone and they don't love you back."

'Yeah, me to ..' Odette said and sighed.

'What's the story of the man who broke your heart?' she said softly, 'if you don't mind me asking ..'

Anya sighed, even though she had Eric now it still hurt to remember. "His name was Proteus, he was captain of the guards at the emporess's palace. I thought he loved me, he was the first person I ever opened up to, but it truns out that he was just pretending to love me. My manager Vladimir hired him as my body guard without telling me. Vladimir and Proteus knew I would never trust him as my body guard so they tricked me by making me think he loved me and I stupidly fell in love with him. He never loved me in fact," Anya laughed bitterly, "He was engaged to someone else."

'I'm so sorry to hear that,' she said, sympathetically, 'who did they think they were helping when they made up that little plan. I mean you would have found out when he married his fiance, whatever happened he would have hurt you .. I wish men would stop thinking they can just play with our feelings as if they were nothing ..' she sighed, frustrated.

"Most men don't consider women's feelings. It's our job to find men that do," Anya smiled, "In a way it was a blessing and a curse that he didn't love me. If he did love me I would be with him, the arrogant ass, rather than Eric."

Odette sighed, 'I guess you're right,' she smiled, 'Anya, you're lucky you have someone that you care for so close by.'

"Yea too bad I met him here," Anya sighed, "Irony is a bitch." she laughed
